Meltham
Meltham lies just below the Pennine moors and one of the highest points in the area, West Nab (501m). The
Meltham Mills, just off Huddersfield Road at the edge of Meltham, was a centre of tractor making for more than 50 years. The David Brown company built the Meltham plant when it ventured into tractor manufacturing in 1936. It was eventually sold to the US owners of JI Case in 1972 but the plant was closed in 1988. The Meltham Mills site is now used by several businesses.
Meltham used to have its own station at the end of a 3.5 mile railway branch line which was opened in 1869 by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company. It linked Meltham to Huddersfield by joining the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield line at Lockwood. The line closed to passengers in 1949, but freight traffic, principally tractors from the Meltham Mills David Brown factory, kept the line open until 1965.
Regular events in the town include a Beer Festival, a Scarecrow Festival and a Meltham Memories 1940s Wartime Weekend.

Meltham has HD9 postcode addresses for which Holmfirth is the postal town, but is a separate town four miles away by road. Unless you place absolute dependance on a full correct postcode, Meltham is a very essential part of the address as there are duplicate street names, including a different Huddersfield Road, in the two towns.
