Paddock
Heading from the town centre and Longroyd Bridge, Paddock starts at Paddock Foot, a street and the name of the locality. This is just beyond the huge Paddock Viaduct which carries the Huddersfield-Penistone-Sheffield railway line across the Colne Valley.
From Market Street at Paddock Foot, the main street of Paddock continues for more than half a mile as Church Street to the roundabout at Paddock Head. The street bridges over the main trans-Pennine railway line.
Just beyond Paddock Head is the Royds Hall Community School, which has an interesting history having begun life as a farmhouse before being rebuilt as a mill owner's mansion. Sir Joseph Crosland, who was Conservative MP for Huddersfield from 1893 to 1895 lived at Royds Hall. The mansion later served as a World War I hospital before becoming the first co-educational secondary school in Huddersfield in 1921. Among a number of notable ex-pupils was Harold Wilson, Labour prime minister from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976.
The foundations of All Saints Parish Church in Paddock were laid in 1828. The church was among the last works of architect John Oates, who died in 1831 and whose other building designs included the original Huddersfield Infirmary building. The chancel was enlarged in the 1870s and has been converted to a house since the church became disused in 1984. Paddock now mostly falls within the anglican parish of St Thomas,
Watch out when using sat-nav or if businesses omit a Paddock village or district line from this Huddersfield address. The Market Street HD1 in Paddock is not the one in the town centre, nor are New Street, High Street, Church Street or Cross Church Street, Paddock, the same as the ones less than a mile away in Huddersfield town centre. There's also a third Market Street just a mile away in Milnsbridge and five different Church Street choices within about three miles.
