New Hey Road, OakesOakes Baptist ChurchNew Hey Road, OakesOakes is a district of Huddersfield around 2 miles west-north-west of Huddersfield town centre around the A640 New Hey Road between Marsh and Salendine Nook, situated also between Lindley and Quarmby.

Until the mid-19th century Oakes was little more than a hamlet of a few houses and possibly the trees that saw it then named as Oaks on the map.

The textile industry grew in the area initially as place where there were "tenters" fields at the roadside where woollen cloth was stretched out and dried in the open air, but soon there came the building of mills in the area and with it a village with rows of Victorian housing, the Oakes Baptist Church and a school.

Oakes Mills, which were built alongside New Hey Road, have been demolished only in recent years to make way for new development. Today the edges of Oakes seem difficult in places to distinguish from its neighbouring districts.
