A mostly residential area, it is also the location of the large school campus of Huddersfield New College and Salendine Nook High School and the Huddersfield YMCA sports ground which extend from the main road towards Longwood Edge.

Laund Hill Communuity Club at New Hey Road has a sports park hosting adult and junior sport including rugby union and soccer. It has a clubhouse with bar and function venue and organises entertainment and fundraising events, among them an annual Last Night of the Proms-style Concert On The Hill. A nordic walking group also meets there.
